Conspiracies and Clues

I WOKE UP THE NEXT DAY, the morning sun shining directly into my eyes through the curtains. I looked around and Alexander was nowhere to be found. "Where the hell could he be?" I thought. I sat up and "Ouch", my nose still hurt. It was then I recalled everything that happened the previous day. I remembered the blood, Viktor's lifeless body lying on the ground and how his gun shook vigorously in my hand after I shot him. I started crying again realizing that I took a person's life. Alexander came in just in time and rushed to me when he saw me crying.

"Hey, it's okay. Don't cry. You are gonna be fine," he said in a comforting tone. Moments later, I stopped crying, still in Alexander's arms. He then stood up to get me something to eat. He came back with a plate of omelette and a cup of shimmering hot tea. "Thank you," I mouthed as I collected the food from him.

"Victoria," he called with an unusual tone. I looked up at him wondering why he called me like that. "We need to leave. And when I say leave, I mean both of us. I'm sorry, but you can't go home to your husband yet."

"We need to leave? Why? I thought you said Viktor was the leader of the Syndicate of Emblems or whatever, and now that he's dead…" he interrupted me before I could finish what I was saying. "First, it's the Syndicate of Shadows. And that was what I thought too. But after what happened yesterday, I couldn't sleep. There was this strong feeling that kept telling me there was more to this. So, I did some digging and found this," he said as he brought out his laptop to show me something.

I shifted toward him to see what it was and I couldn't believe my eyes. What the actual fuck?! The Syndicate was a larger organization and Viktor was merely a pawn in a much larger scheme. On the screen of his laptop, I could see how they've been running different operations; drug trafficking, assassination, mass bombing and I just couldn't get a hold of myself anymore. It kept getting deeper and deeper. "But how were you able to get all this information?" I asked.

He ignored the question, looked up at me and moved closer, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Hey, Victoria. I know you are scared, and I'm really sorry. But you and I, we have to go through this together. And I promise you, I'll bring down their whole damn world to keep you safe." His voice was warm as ever, offering me a little comfort at that moment. We curled up together and stayed like that for some time.

Suddenly, his phone rang and he reached for his pocket to retrieve it. "Unknown number? This call looks encrypted," he said, his eyebrows forming a curious line. He was reluctant at first, he looked at me and then back at his phone.
